Early this morning sheriff’s office deputies were involved in a shooting resulting in death. Phillip Allen Baldwin, 31, who was armed with a 9mm pistol, was shot multiple times at 12:48 a.m. after threatening to shoot deputies, ending several violent encounters with South Putnam residents over the course of an hour.
Prior to the shooting dispatchers received two calls involving Baldwin. At 11:33 p.m. Friday evening, a woman on Shell Harbor Road called screaming for help and referenced a car jacking. As deputies responded to that call, another call for help occurred at about 12:36 a.m. Saturday morning involving a disturbance in the 300 block of North Second Street in Satsuma. The caller said a man was threatening others with a 9mm. Witnesses at scene identified Baldwin as the man with the gun. Deputies located Baldwin in the area. As deputies attempted to approach, Baldwin made a gesture of reaching for the firearm in his waistband and exposing the firearm. At that time deputies responded by firing, striking Baldwin multiple times. Immediately after firing, deputies rushed to Baldwin and began CPR. Baldwin was taken to HCA Putnam Hospital where he died.
All three deputies are on administrative leave per sheriff’s office policy. As with all officer involved shootings, FDLE is investigating. This is the first officer involved shooting in Putnam County since 2017. This is an ongoing investigation. There is no additional information at this time. There is body camera of the call that is currently under review.
